EXTREME NOISE TERROR ( ENT )

Extreme Noise Terror (often abbreviated to ENT) are an English hardcore punk band originally formed in Ipswich in 1985. They are considered one of the earliest and most influential European grindcore bands, particularly in the crustgrind fusion genre. Noted for one of the earliest uses of dual vocalists in hardcore, and for recording a number of sessions for BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, Extreme Noise Terror started as a crust punk band and helped characterise the early, archetypal grindcore sound with fiercely political lyrics, grinding guitars, extremely fast tempo and often very short songs.

Biography

Early years

 

Extreme Noise Terror were formed in early 1985 in Ipswich, England, originally consisting of dual vocalists Dean Jones and Phil Vane, guitarist Pete Hurley, bassist Jerry Clay and drummer Darren Olley aka Pig Killer. Prior to ENT, Vane and Hurley had played with Discharge-influenced acts Freestate and Victims of War, whilst Jones had been singing with Raw Noise. Hurley claims that the band name came from an insert for an album by the Dutch band Lärm: "It featured a bandanna-ed hardcore kid with 'Extreme Noise Terror' surrounding him. Those three words summed up exactly what we were aiming at." Aside from Discharge, the band cite as early influences Anti Cimex, Rattus and Antisect, another early proponent of the "one high, one low" vocal approach. ENT signed to the small UK-based indie label Manic Ears after a solitary gig supporting fellow UK punks Chaos UK.

Their first release for the label was a split LP with Chaos UK in 1986, entitled Radioactive Earslaughter. Although there were still musical similarities between the two bands, ENT were already beginning to twist hardcore into what would later become known as "grindcore". ENT have however expressed misgivings about the use of the term:

We were known as hardcore punk. Then it became this 'Britcore' thing that Sounds and NME came up with, with the Electro Hippies, Napalm, Carcass and Bolt Thrower all rolled into one, all playing the same shows and then [Napalm Death] made the word 'grind' up. But they were always a bit more metal than us and we didn't really know what this word 'grind' meant.

In 1987, ENT came to the attention of John Peel, on the recommendation of fellow Ipswich group The Stupids. After seeing them live at the Caribbean Centre in Ipswich with his wife and son, Peel offered them their first (of four) Peel Session for BBC Radio 1, which was released through Strange Fruit. A second Peel Session was recorded the following May.

During this period, the drum stool was filled by former Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris, although he left soon afterward to form Scorn and was replaced by Tony "Stick" Dickens (of crust band Doom). Bassist Clay was replaced by Mark Gardener, and this line-up recorded ENT's debut album, A Holocaust in Your Head, which was later voted number 3 in Terrorizer's essential European grindcore albums, who described it as "marrying a thick crust-punk crunch and vitriolic lyrical assault with the newborn, clattering fury of grindcore, 'Holocaust...' followed Napalm's heroic uppercuts and haymakers with a Doc Martin in the goolies." The band undertook a headline tour of both Europe and Japan in support of the album. In 1990, Jones and future ENT guitarist Ali Firouzbakht guested on Raw Noise's "Sound of Destruction" single release, and bassist Gardener was replaced by Peter Nash from the band Doom.

Collaboration with the KLF

 

On their return from Japan, ENT were invited to perform their third Peel Session, which was released along with their first as a full-length LP by Strange Fruit. The band then embarked on another European tour, after which they released their second record, Phonophobia, through Vinyl Japan and returned to tour Japan once again. Further radio support from John Peel brought ENT to the attention of Bill Drummond of The KLF; the two acts got in touch and Drummond asked ENT to re-record a version of KLF's hit single "3 a.m. Eternal", with the intention of the band performing live on Top of the Pops at Christmas.

The BBC, however, felt that the song was inappropriate for broadcast on daytime television and thus refused to air the track, leading to the KLF boycotting the show. The single eventually saw limited edition release through KLF Communications and won Single of the Week from both the NME and Melody Maker. ENT also worked on the abandoned KLF album The Black Room (the KLF had previously released an ambient album called The White Room), but when Drummond and KLF co-member Jimmy Cauty announced the band's retirement, they also deleted the recordings.
When asked how the collaboration came about, Jones said: "What actually happened was that Bill heard us on Peel when he was in the bath and got in touch. They had wanted to do rock versions of their songs with Motörhead but something fell through, so he rang us... The message said it's Bill from The KLF, but I thought they said 'the ALF' so I didn't take much notice... Later, we got another message saying it was definitely Bill from The KLF and I said 'f--- off! What does he want with us?' But it all got explained eventually." The two bands were later asked to appear at the 1992 BRIT Awards, at which they caused controversy by firing blanks from machine guns into the audience, a performance that the NME listed at number 4 in their "top 100 rock moments".

Retro-bution, Vane's departure and subsequent albums

Extreme Noise Terror continued to tour throughout 1993 and 1994, and underwent further line-up changes; drummer Dickens left to join DIRT and was replaced by former member Pig Killer, Lee Barrett (founder of Candlelight Records and also member of Disgust) took over on bass, and Ali Firouzbakht joined on lead guitar. At the request of Digby Pearson, this line-up signed to Earache in June 1994 and recorded Retro-bution, essentially a compilation of re-recorded material from the band's earlier days, which was released in January 1995. The motivation behind this release was due to the band's dissatisfaction with their earlier recordings and saw ENT take a slightly more metal direction, including the addition of some guitar solos. A short UK tour followed, followed by touring in Europe and the US and a further line-up change occurred with Pig Killer being replaced by former Cradle of Filth drummer William A. "Was" Sarginson. (After several years as a professional photographer, in 2012 Pig Killer joined ladies' punk ukulele collective The Pukes. He currently drums for The Featherz under the name Dazzle Monroe.) The line-up changes continued with the departure of founder member Phil Vane, who left to join Napalm Death in late 1996. In an example of trading places, Napalm Death frontman Mark "Barney" Greenway agreed to join ENT during the recording of their next album, Damage 381.

The album, whose title comes from the BPM recorded on the title track, saw ENT moving further into death metal territory, reincorporating some of the blast beats and screamed vocals that had been missing from their previous two releases. The album also benefited from a production from noted metal producer Colin Richardson. At the same time Napalm Death were having a hard time getting the vocals that they wanted from Vane and asked Greenway to return, which he agreed to do, leaving ENT once again lacking a second vocalist. Vane subsequently returned to the band in 1997.
Further line-up changes occurred in 1999, with Vane once again departing to be replaced by Adam Catchpole, Sarginson being replaced by Zac O'Neil, and former Cradle of Filth member Gian Pyres joining on lead guitar. In 2001, the band signed to Candlelight and released their fourth full-length album, Being and Nothing. The band also played a fourth session for BBC Radio 1 in February 2001 and continued to tour round Europe, including a slot on the main stage at Wacken Open Air in 2003.

Recent activity

 

Ever struggling with line-up problems, Paul "Woody" Woodfield took over on lead guitar for studio and live duties in early 2001, whilst Stafford Glover took over on bass (from the departing Barrett, who left to concentrate on To-Mera) and Desecration's Ollie Jones was added to the line-up as permanent second guitarist. In early 2006, Phil Vane once again returned to the band after living in Switzerland for six and a half years. Zac O'Neil also left the band, to be replaced by Mic Hourihan (of Tigertailz). In 2007, ENT toured the US with grind merchants Phobia and released a split recording with Driller Killer through French label Osmose. The following year the band released a split 7" with Trap Them (released on Deathwish Inc.) to coincide with their joint US West Coast Distortion tour,which culminated at the 2008 Los Angeles Murderfest. In amongst playing shows worldwide, including Indonesia, Russia, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Finland, Germany, Estonia and at the Obscene Extreme Festival in the Czech Republic, ENT recorded their next album, Law of Retaliation which was released in early 2009 by Osmose in Europe, MCR Company in Japan, and Deep Six Records in the US. Terrorizer described it as "a rabid, intense and gleeful return to explosive, hyper-speed hardcore punk insanity". The band continued to tour with shows throughout 2009 in Europe and a third Japanese tour, this time with Slang.
Though still fiercely political, in recent years the band has become more open-minded regarding some of their beliefs, especially concerning vegetarianism, and the use of drugs and alcohol. Jones commented:

I think now it's more acceptable not being vegetarian, being PC, admitting that you like having sex, because at one point with the likes of Profane Existence [anarchist punk fanzine] and Maximumrockandroll [legendary punk zine, infamous for scene policing], and I hate to say it, but it felt like some sort of restrictive Nazi regime. You have to be like this to be crust. Which to me was the total opposite to what it should be. I stayed with my beliefs, but I didn't like being told what to do to fit in with the audience [...] But now, the progression is more to do with that the fact that everyone is doing what they want, whether it's drink, drugs, sex. So yes, it has progressed.

In later years, Vane was the only vegetarian member of the band, and ENT no longer played pro-vegetarian songs like "Murder", although songs like "Think About It" (which questions the meat industry) remained in their set-list.
On 17 February 2011, Phil Vane died in his sleep due to a cerebrovascular accident at the age of 46. The band have continued to tour and release music with former Gorerotted and The Rotted frontman Ben McCrow, with the band dedicating their 2015 self-titled album to Vane's memory.

SAARA SAARA ( BRAZILIAN ELECTRONIC MUSIC )

Project created in 1985 in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. Members : Servio Tulio and Raul Rachid. They represent a kind of music very exotic in Rio de Janeiro in that age. The duo have done an electronic music very ironic that mixed some contemporary 80´s techno pop music with non-sense atmosphere from 20´s cabarets.

Their musics were played on Fluminense Fm (RJ) from Rio de Janeiro every single day. They did many concerts between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The first concert, happened the begining the 1986 in an event in Teatro do Planetário da Gávea (RJ) Rio de Janeiro,done by Rádio Fluminense.
They did many concerts : Casa de Cultura Laura Alvin (RJ), Teatro João Theotônio (RJ), SESC Pompéia (SP), Centro de Artes (Friburgo), Teatro da UFF (Niterói), Circo Voador (RJ), Teatro Leopoldo Fróes (Niterói) and etc... Their tapes were produced for theirself and they showed their musics for many radios in Brazil and around the world: Transamérica FM (RJ), Rádio Jornal do Brasil (RJ), 89 FM (SP), Estação Primeira de Curitiba and in many alternative radios in Europe: Belgium,Portugal,France,Holand and Germany.

They showed eight video clips in many television Channels here in Brazil like : TVE, TV Manchete, TV Rio, TV Bandeirantes, Museu de Arte Moderna, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Cineclube Estação Botafogo e Centro de Artes de Friburgo.

  After disbanding in the late 80's, they made a come back and recorded their first and only album called "Sucessos Que O Mundo Esqueceu".

In 2011, the keybordist Raul Rachid died putting the recordings of the second album (and any other activity of the group) on hiatus.

CRUDE S.S. was forming in minor town Norberg back in 1979 by Ebbe guitar,Pelle vocal / base, in the first 2 years we was changing members, then the band was formed as the most people know CSS,Ebbe(guitar),Sven(vocal),Hocke(drums) and Dick (Bass) The music has always been aggressive and uncompromising,  CRUDE S.S. started to record the first songs 1982. 7” Who´ll Survive, later on couple of split LP,s etc.  1987 we did our last show in Denmark_Kopenhagen then the band more ore less was splitting up,  1991 Hocke was unfortunately killed in train accident.(R.I.P) 2014-2015 we re-formed the band and did our first gig 27 June-15 in Stockholm_Cyklopen, nowadays the setting is Ebbe (Guitar)  Dick (base+vocal) and Janne (Drums).

Op: l BASTARDS

Op:l Bastards was formed by Timo Kaukolampi (born 1971), Vilunki 3000 (real name: Mikko Viljakainen, b. 1973) and Tuomo Puranen from Helsinki, Finland. Kaukolampi and Vilunki had earlier on played in the garage rock band Larry and the Lefthanded. Their original name was Opel Bastards, but they had to change it due to the pressure from Opel company.
Their music is categorised as electronic music. They are described as having "specializ[ed] in Kraut-baiting impenetrability." 
In 2007 Op:l Bastards had their first gig in five years on the 18th of August at Flow festival of Helsinki. The Job album was re-released on Op:l's record label Lefta Records in Finland, with liner notes written by Philip Oakey (of The Human League fame).
The group released their second album in 2009.

KLINIK ( EBM )

Klinik, (sometimes called The Klinik), is an industrial music band from Belgium, originally formed around 1982 by electro-synthpop practitioner Marc Verhaeghen, who is the only constant member.

History

Marc Verhaeghen originally formed Klinik in the early-to-mid 1980s; the exact date varies depending on the source. The group is normally described as one of the most influential Belgian industrial bands in history.
In 1985, Verhaeghen joined forces with two other bands, Absolute Body Control (with Dirk Ivens and Eric van Wonterghem), and "The Maniacs" (Sandy Nys) to form one "super group" "Absolute Controlled Clinical Maniacs".

This rather unwieldy name was soon dropped in favour of the shorter name "The Klinik". Nys soon left the band to form "Hybryds", followed in 1987 by van Wonterghem, leaving The Klinik as the "classic" duo of Dirk Ivens and Marc Verhaeghen.

The Klinik soon made a name for themselves with their cold and harsh EBM sound and their live shows, where both Ivens and Verhaeghen performed with their heads wrapped in gauze, wearing long black leather coats. Ivens' hissing vocals and minimalist lyrics were complemented by Verhaeghen's synthesizer skills and distorted trombone playing. This however, did not last forever; after Time, an album neither member was fully pleased with, musical differences became too great, and they decided to go their separate ways. In a 2013 interview, Ivens said the due were moving in different directions musically, and that compromise between only two members was challenging.

Ivens concentrated on his own project Dive, and Verhaeghen continued as Klinik (dropping the definite article from the bandname at this point); sometimes as a solo project, sometimes with various other members.
Most Klinik members have also been active outside the band. Ivens has been in bands such as Absolute Body Control, Dive, Sonar, and Blok 57; Eric van Wonterghem played with Ivens in Absolute Body Control, and has later been part of or collaborating with bands such as Insekt, Monolith, Dive and Sonar. Sandy Nys formed Hybryds already around his departure in 1986, a project which is still active.

Verhaeghen has been involved in several projects outside Klinik, including Noise Unit (with Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber of Front Line Assembly), D.Sign (with Philippe and Eliane Fichot of Die Form), X10 (with Niki Mono, Marc Ickx of A Split-Second and Vidna Obmana), and Para (with his own wife Sabine Voss).

Ivens and Verhaeghen briefly reunited for a few concerts in 2003/2004, one of which was released as a CD in September 2004.
The band's first album in 22 years, Eat Your Heart Out, was released in a limited pressing of 150 black vinyl copies in April 2013.

SCHNITT ACHT

Schnitt Acht was an American EBM and industrial metal band from Orlando, Florida, active in the first half of the 1990s. The band's name is German for "cut eight", initially a translation error of "Section 8", "Abschnitt Acht" in German.

History

Formed in the late 1980s in Orlando, Florida by Morgan Lekcirt (born William Morgan Trickel), Virgil L. Hibbs, Abbot Zigler (born Christopher Lee) and later Jeff Paymaster, they signed in 1989 with DJ Magic Mike's Majii label that was part of the Cheetah Record Company. Following several 12-inch singles, Schnitt Acht (alternately spelled SCHNITT Acht!) released their first album Subhuman Minds in 1990.

 It was followed in 1993 by Slash and Burn. Between 1991 and 1994 the band did a lot of touring, even performing in Europe and making tours in Germany and Romania. After their last tour in 1994, the band split up.

Virgil later started his own band WIRETRIPN, with which he self-released in 2001 the album Midnight in the Robot Factory via online retailer IUMA.
Christopher with Morgan,and Jan Herkach the techno/rave trio Radioactive Goldfish with whom he released "LSD Is the Bomb" which hit #8 of the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs on March 14, 1992. Later he kept releasing as - among others - Rainbow Bridge and Gypsy Sun, worked as a producer in Florida and run the label Rainbow Bridge Records out of Orlando.

Subhuman Minds (or with its subtitle Subhuman Minds on the Firing Line) was the band's first album, released on vinyl in 1990 by Cheetah's Majii label. It is electro-industrial and was licensed by Hyperium Records for a German release. For while, a CD release of the album was only available by the German label, but in 1991 Cheetah issued a Gold release for the North American market.

With their second album Slash and Burn, released in 1993, they slowly moved into a more metal-influenced style, while trying to retain much that made their first album work. Originally release on Cheetah's Majii label, it was licensed by Hyperium for Germany and by Devotion Records for the U.K.

GAROTOS PODRES ( BRAZILIAN STREET PUNK BAND )

Garotos Podres is a Brazilian punk rock band formed in 1982 in the city of Mauá in the metropolitan region of São Paulo called A.B.C..

In 1985, while Brazil was still under military dictatorship, they appeared on the Ataque Sonoro compilation along with Ratos de Porão, Cólera, Lobotomia and others of the Brazilian hardcore. They released the first album of the band, Mais Podres do que Nunca ("More Rotten Than Ever"), on the now defunct Rocker label and then the band really started, selling about 50,000 copies and becoming popular until today. In July 2016, the album was elected by Rolling Stone Brasil as the 3rd best Brazilian punk rock album.

Due to censorship at the time, the song Johnny was censored, while others such as Papai Noel Filho da Puta (Santa Claus Son of a Bitch) and Maldita Policia (Damn Police) were relaunched as Papai-Noel Velho Batuta (Santa Claus Cool Old Man, where "velho batuta" sounds very close to "filho da puta", "son of a bitch" on a free translation) and Maldita Preguiça (Damned Laziness) respectively.
Mao, vocalist of the band, is also a history teacher with a Doctorate in History.
In 2013 the band split, Mao and Cacá Saffiotti founded a new band named "O Satânico Dr. Mao e os Espiões Secretos". The other members continue playing the old songs of "Garotos Podres" by the name "Garotos"
